June 2011: Molybdenum-99 production at FRM II Neutron Source
Funding has been approved to upgrade the FRM II neutron source
at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen in Garching, Germany to produce the urgently required
radioisotope Molybdenum-99. This will involve installing a thimble right next
to the reactor core to produce the Molybdenum-99. The reactor is already used
to produce Lutetium-177 for the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors.
The cost of the 2 year project will be 5.4 million Euros, and they expect to produce
roughly half the European demand for Molybdenum-99. For more
